Late April 2024

The Honey Badgers 8u Steele took down Mentor Big Red 2015 and the Ohio Cobras to win the Y-Town Mayhem Tournament on Sunday.

Honey Badgers end April with tough competition, a walk-off winner and a Tournament Championship

It was a busy end of the month as the Honey Badgers organization saw three teams all in action over the final weekend of April. Here is a look at how it all played out.

10u in Action at Y-Town Mayhem Tournament

10u Brindle wrapped up April playing in Hubbard, Ohio at the Thunder Elite Y-Town Mayhem Tournament where they faced some very strong competition. After a 12-5 win over Force 10u to start things off, they ran into a buzzsaw of opponents falling to the eventual championship game opponents Ohio Outlaws (Lucia) and Team PA (Tobin) on Saturday. They returned on Sunday to face Team PA (Tobin) again on Sunday and fell 4-1 in a game that was tied 1-1 heading into the 5th inning. McKenna C and Kacey led the team in hits with 4 and both Mia and McKayla added 2 while Makenna K added a hit and walked 4 times which resulted in 6 runs and 8 stolen bases for the weekend.

The Honey Badgers 10u - Brindle will return to action this weekend for tournament play in Hubbard, Ohio.

13u Wins in another Walk-Off thriller, Sweeps Doubleheader with ROC Elite

13u stayed busy with doubleheaders in both of the final two weekends of the month. Facing the Ohio Varsity Vipers 13u in Eastlake, Ohio on April 21st, the cold weather did not slow down Coach Fiddler's team as they defeated the Vipers 18-4 and 12-4 with Bella Mattern and Hannah Young picking up the wins on the mound. Returning to action a week later, they faced ROC Elite Havoc 14u in the first two games ever played at Honey Badger Field in Canfield, and came away with two more victories, 2-0 and 8-7. The first game was a pitchers' duel with Bella Mattern taking care of business throwing a shutout and striking out 8 in 6 innings pitched. In game two the Honey Badgers' bats came alive in the bottom of the 5th as they knocked 6 of their 8 team hits for the game when it counted. Down 7-2 in the final frame, Autumn Miller started the inning with a double and moved up on Abbey Pesce's infield single. Aislyn Fuller then hit the 2-strike pitch up the middle to score two, making it 7-4. Harper Heim added another single leading to Hannah Young's big 2-run double to cut it to 7-6 with one out. Elizabeth Jernigan then beat out a bunt for another hit and the overthrow tied the game leading to the exciting finish. Jernigan advanced to third base and scored on an errant throw to the pitcher, just reaching around the catcher for the winning run as the Honey Badgers put 6 on the board in the 5th for the 8-7 win. Young picked up the win in relief as the ladies improved to 8-0-1 on the season.

The Honey Badgers 13u - Fiddler team will be back in action in two weeks at the Choose Joy! Tournament in Canfield, May 10-12.

8u Steele wins Thunder Elite Y-Town Mayhem Tournament

8u Steele finished the month with action on April 20th where they took on the Warriors 8u team as the bats were hot accounting for 24 runs and 36 hits in a 24-16 win. Riley and Olivia had 5 hits apiece and Maddie, Brooklyn, Sofia, Lily, Tessa and Carmella each added 4 hits in the offensive explosion. A week later they were back in action in Hubbard, Ohio playing in the Thunder Elite Y-Town Mayhem Tournament. After a 14-4 loss to the Ohio Cobras 8u on Saturday, the girls were rained out on Saturday evening and forced to move right into bracket play on Sunday. But true to the Honey Badger motto, the girls came to play on Sunday and didn't care who they faced. Starting the day against Big Red 2015, the girls knocked 21 hits, coming from behind in the final inning for an 11-10 win as Corrine has the game-winning hit to advance. Then, in a rematch with the Ohio Cobras 8u in the Championship Game, the Honey Badgers were able to hold off the Cobras' bats in the final two innings to earn a 13-12 win. Tessa and Sofia each led the team with 6 hits on the day and Riley joined them as each had 3 hits apiece in the Championship Game.

The Honey Badgers 8u - Steele team will be back in action in two weeks at the Choose Joy! Tournament in Canfield, May 10-12.

The other Honey Badger teams are hard at work preparing for their season with both 8u Ohl and 9u Mattern practicing regularly and preparing for their tournaments in May while the 18u Showcase team will return to action after the High School softball season is complete.
